Three Types of Questions

  • Before reading: What do I already know? What do I want to learn?
  • During reading: What is happening? Why? What does this word mean?
  • After reading: What was the main message? What did I learn?

Question Words

Use these to make strong questions:

  • Who — asks about people
  • What — asks about things or events
  • Where — asks about places
  • When — asks about time
  • Why — asks about reasons
  • How — asks about methods or processes

Read this passage and write 3 questions about it:

Wangari Maathai was a Kenyan woman who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004. She started the Green Belt Movement, which planted over 51 million trees across Africa. She believed that taking care of the environment was connected to peace and women's rights. She inspired millions of people to protect their land.
