Making Connections

Connect what you read to your own life, other texts, and the world

12 min

Learning Objective

4Rs4: Make connections between texts and personal experience

Three Types of Connections

  • Text to Self: "This reminds me of when I..."
  • Text to Text: "This is like another story I read..."
  • Text to World: "This connects to what is happening in..."

Why Connections Help

When you connect what you read to things you already know, you understand and remember it better.

Practice

Read this and make one of each connection:

Adaeze's family moved to a new city. On her first day at her new school, she didn't know anyone. She sat alone at lunch. Then a girl named Fatima came over and said, "Would you like to sit with us?" Adaeze smiled. Maybe this new school wouldn't be so bad after all.

  • Text to Self: Have you ever been new somewhere?
  • Text to Text: Does this remind you of another story?
  • Text to World: Many children in Nigeria move to new cities for school. How does this connect?
