Learn to notice and fix mistakes when reading

12 min

Learning Objective

4Rf3: Self-correct errors during reading using meaning and phonics cues

What is Self-Monitoring?

Good readers notice when something doesn't make sense and go back to fix it. This is called self-monitoring.

Three Questions to Ask Yourself

  1. Does it make sense? (meaning) — If not, re-read the sentence
  2. Does it sound right? (grammar) — Would someone say it that way?
  3. Does it look right? (visual/phonics) — Do the letters match what I said?

Example

Text: "The farmer planted corn in the field."

If you read "filed" instead of "field":

  • Does "filed" make sense? No — you don't plant corn in a "filed"
  • Look again at the word: f-i-e-l-d → field!
  • Re-read: "The farmer planted corn in the field." ✓

Practice

Read this paragraph. If you get stuck on a word, use the three questions:

The village celebrated the harvest festival with great excitement. Everyone brought different dishes to share. The children performed traditional dances while the elders watched proudly. It was a wonderful evening that brought the whole community together.
