Review of multiplication strategies:

  • Times 2: Double the number.
  • Times 5: Answers end in 0 or 5.
  • Times 10: Add a zero.
  • Times 4: Double-double.
  • Times 3: Digits add to 3, 6, or 9.
  • Times 1: Same number. Times 0: Always 0.
  • Partitioning: Split the bigger number and multiply each part.

Challenge 1: 7 × 8 = ? Think: 7 × 8 = 7 × (4 + 4) = 28 + 28 = 56. Or just remember: 5, 6, 7, 8 → 56 = 7 × 8!

Challenge 2: 6 × 15. Partition: 6 × 10 + 6 × 5 = 60 + 30 = 90.

Challenge 3: A school orders 8 boxes of chalk. Each box has 24 pieces. How many pieces? 8 × 24 = 8 × 20 + 8 × 4 = 160 + 32 = 192 pieces.
