🏪 Market Story

Amina has ₦86 and spends ₦43 on tomatoes. How much does she have left? She subtracts the ones: 6 − 3 = 3. Then the tens: 8 − 4 = 4. She has ₦43 left.

📝 Let's Learn

To subtract two-digit numbers, subtract the ones first, then subtract the tens.

Example 1: ₦75 − ₦32. Ones: 5 − 2 = 3. Tens: 7 − 3 = 4. Answer: ₦43.

Example 2: ₦98 − ₦51. Ones: 8 − 1 = 7. Tens: 9 − 5 = 4. Answer: ₦47.

Example 3: ₦67 − ₦24. Ones: 7 − 4 = 3. Tens: 6 − 2 = 4. Answer: ₦43.

This is easy when the top digit is bigger than the bottom digit in each column. We'll learn what to do when it isn't in the next lesson!
