Chidi and his sister Funke are helping their father count items at his provision store. Chidi counts 6 tins of milk on one shelf and 4 on another. "6 plus 4 equals 10!" he says. Funke counts 3 packets of biscuits on one shelf and 5 on another. "3 plus 5 equals 8!" she says. Their father is proud of them both.

Important addition facts to 10:

  • 5 + 5 = 10 (doubles!)
  • 6 + 4 = 10 and 7 + 3 = 10 and 8 + 2 = 10 and 9 + 1 = 10
  • 4 + 3 = 7 and 5 + 3 = 8 and 6 + 3 = 9

Pairs that make 10 are very important: 1+9, 2+8, 3+7, 4+6, 5+5. Memorise these!

Example 1: 7 + 2 = 9. Start at 7, count on 2 more: 8, 9.

Example 2: 4 + 5 = 9. You can count on from 5 (the bigger number): 6, 7, 8, 9.

Example 3: 6 + 4 = 10. These are a pair that makes 10.
