Letters have names AND sounds. The letter B is named "bee" but its SOUND is /b/ as in "ball." When we read, we use the sounds, not the names. Let us learn the sounds for letters a to m.

Each letter makes a sound. Here are the sounds for a to m:

  • a — /a/ as in ant, apple
  • b — /b/ as in ball, boy
  • c — /k/ as in cat, cup
  • d — /d/ as in dog, door
  • e — /e/ as in egg, elbow
  • f — /f/ as in fan, fish
  • g — /g/ as in goat, girl
  • h — /h/ as in hat, hen
  • i — /i/ as in igloo, ink
  • j — /j/ as in jar, jump
  • k — /k/ as in kite, king
  • l — /l/ as in leg, lamp
  • m — /m/ as in man, mango
