The Clever Tortoise
Listen to a Nigerian folktale and find the main idea.
🎯 What You'll Learn
You will listen to a Nigerian folktale and find the main idea — what the story is mostly about.
🌟 Let's Start
In Nigeria, our grandparents and elders tell wonderful stories called folktales. One of the most famous characters is the Tortoise, who is very clever. Let us hear a folktale about him!
📚 The Story
Long ago, the animals had a contest. Elephant said, "I am the strongest! I should be the king." Lion roared, "No, I am the bravest! I should be king." Eagle said, "I can fly the highest! I should be king."
Little Tortoise said quietly, "I would like to try too." All the animals laughed. "You? You are small and slow!"
The wise old Owl set a challenge: "The one who can bring water from the river in a basket shall be king."
Elephant tried. The water poured through the holes. Lion tried. The water leaked out. Eagle tried. The water dripped away. They all failed.
Tortoise smiled. He went to the river, lined the basket with large banana leaves, and then filled it with water. The leaves stopped the water from leaking! He carried the basket back without spilling a single drop.
All the animals cheered. Tortoise became the king. He was not the biggest, fastest, or strongest — but he was the cleverest.
