🎯 What You'll Learn

You will learn to hear the very last sound in a word. This is called the ending sound.

🌟 Let's Start

Chidi is learning a new game. He says the word cat very slowly: c-a-t. The last sound he hears is /t/! Now he tries drum: d-r-u-m. The last sound is /m/! Let us play this game too.

📚 New Concept

The ending sound is the very last sound you hear when you say a word. Let us practice:

  • bus — the ending sound is /s/
  • red — the ending sound is /d/
  • book — the ending sound is /k/
  • rain — the ending sound is /n/
  • leaf — the ending sound is /f/

To hear the ending sound, say the word slowly and hold on to the very last sound: bu-sssss, re-ddddd, boo-kkkk.

Think about things at your school. Pen ends with /n/. Desk ends with /k/. Bag ends with /g/.

The ending sound is just as important as the beginning sound. Great readers pay attention to every part of a word!
