🎯 What You'll Learn

You will learn to hear the very first sound in a word. This is called the beginning sound.

🌟 Let's Start

Emeka loves to eat mangoes. Listen to the word mango. What is the very first sound you hear? It is /m/! The sound /m/ is the beginning sound of mango. Every word starts with a sound, and today we will learn to hear that first sound.

📚 New Concept

The beginning sound is the very first sound you hear when you say a word. Let us practice:

  • ball — the beginning sound is /b/
  • sun — the beginning sound is /s/
  • fish — the beginning sound is /f/
  • dog — the beginning sound is /d/
  • rice — the beginning sound is /r/

Say each word slowly. Stretch out the first sound: mmmmango, sssssun, fffffish. Can you hear it? That stretched-out part is the beginning sound!

Think about the foods you eat at home. Garri starts with /g/. Plantain starts with /p/. Yam starts with /y/.
