15 minIncludes video

Learning Objective

4Rw3: Use syllable knowledge to read multi-syllable words

What is a Syllable?

A syllable is a word part with one vowel sound. Clap each part:

  • wa-ter = 2 syllables (clap, clap)
  • beau-ti-ful = 3 syllables (clap, clap, clap)
  • el-e-phant = 3 syllables
  • un-der-stand = 3 syllables

How to Divide Words

  1. Find the vowels in the word
  2. Look at the consonants between vowels
  3. Split between consonants: rab-bit, hap-py
  4. If only one consonant, try splitting before it: o-pen, mu-sic

Practice: Split and Read

  1. important → im-por-tant
  2. education → ed-u-ca-tion
  3. Nigeria → Ni-ge-ri-a
  4. community → com-mu-ni-ty
